The owner of this tired and dated dwelling provided a brief to redevelop the house into a modern home for contemporary family living. The existing house will be remodelled substantially, and extended to the rear to augment the relationship with the long rear garden. The extensions will be layered volumes in contrasting coloured brickwork, to help visually reduce the large extension and fragment the new space into individual areas. The stepped nature of the volumes assists the vertical transition from the house to the lower garden, and will develop the visual and architectural interest through shadow, materiality and texture.
